ARTIST STATEMENT
My metalsmithing experience goes back to the age of ten, and I’ve been making jewelry on and off ever since. After majoring in studio art in college, I took an odd, if practical detour into the practice of law for about 12 years. Finally, after giving up the legal profession, I returned to my real passion – making jewelry.
I make jewelry because it’s the most fun thing I can imagine doing! I pursue design ideas and techniques that appeal to me personally – making things I’d like to wear myself, whether or not they are consistent with current trends. My work involves a number of different themes and styles. Some of my work explores organic forms – not actually seen in nature but evocative of natural forms. Other items reflect my interest in the repetitive rhythms of geometric forms. Still others are the result of my interest in bringing color into my work in unconventional ways.
I work mainly in traditional jewelry metals (gold, silver, copper, and brass) and am most fascinated by discovering what these metals, on their own, can become, although I sometimes incorporate less traditional materials for contrast and fun.
Every item I make gives me ideas for the next project. Once I’ve made something once, I’m eager to make it again, but with some modifications, or to move on to something entirely new. I am a believer in the idea that everyone is an artist in one way or another. It is human nature to want to make things, and I feel very lucky that I’ve been able to indulge that creative urge on a regular basis.
